What Your Readout Actually Means
Ball speed, smash factor, spin, and descent angle each tell a different part of the story, and none of them explain a shot alone. Here's what the numbers mean once you're standing in front of the screen.
The Number That Grades a Strike, Not a Swing
Smash factor is simply ball speed divided by clubhead speed — a ratio, not a raw number. A driver strike near the center of the face with a modern head commonly lands close to 1.50. Miss toward the heel or toe and that ratio drops even if your swing speed barely changes, because energy that should transfer into ball speed gets lost to spin and vibration instead.
It's the fastest single number on the screen for telling whether a session's focus should shift from equipment to strike location, or the other way around.
Rate and Axis Are Two Different Questions
Spin Rate
How much backspin the ball carries, measured in revolutions per minute. Too little and the ball drops out of the air early; too much and it balloons and loses carry, especially into any headwind.
Spin Axis
The tilt of that spin, measured in degrees left or right of vertical. This is what actually curves the ball in the air — a tilted axis with plenty of total spin still bends hard, regardless of what the spin rate number alone suggests.
The Number That Decides What Happens After Carry
Two shots can land on the exact same carry number and behave completely differently on the green or fairway, because descent angle — how steeply the ball is falling at the top of its flight — controls how much it releases forward after touching down.
A steeper descent angle tends to hold the ball closer to where it lands, which matters far more for wedges and mid-irons than it does for a driver, where roll-out is usually welcome rather than a problem to solve.
